For 3 months, my other half and I have been going through a body transformation programme; slogging our guts out at the gym, eating high-protein / low carb, with no refined sugar, no alcohol, no going out, no takeaways… basically, no fun! It’s been hellish and rewarding and brutal and amazing all rolled into one. We’ve now made it through the other side, and feel incredible. I am now in the best shape I’ve been in since before I went to university (over a decade ago) and super chuffed with my will power and stamina for saying ‘no' to all the temptation that has come my way.
For our Diet Independence Day (so named since our last training day fell on 4th July), we decided to celebrate doing the one thing we have missed doing for 3 months… go out for dinner!
We headed out to Beck at Brown’s Hotel, Heinz Beck’s London post, which offers high-end Italian fare. In a lavish botanical setting, we sat in a velvet curved booth by the window and were waited on by a friendly and knowledgeable front of house team.
We started with the roasted octopus, pecorino Romano cheese and infusion of green pea, and the gnocchi with sprint lamb, Gran Padano cheese and foraged herbs, both of which were delicious. The roasted octopus had such a wonderful texture, tender with a bite, and the lamb melted in your mouth.
Our mains were light and full of flavour - a pan friend Cornish turbo, heritage tomato verbena dressing and pea purée, and a wild sea bas, baby chard and green gazpacho.
To finish, we shared a selection of British and Italian cheese, served with dried fruit and quince jelly, before devouring a strawberry lemon curd and almond ice cream, and a rhubarb and white chocolate desserts. Washed down with fresh mint tea (and petit fours of course!)
All dishes were beautifully plated, and the service excellent. It was the perfect celebratory meal where we were able to (over) indulge but not come out feeling like we had undone our 3 months of hard work in a 3 hour sitting!
Thank you Beck at Browns.
*Editor’s note: Beck at Browns closed down a few weeks after we dine there, at the end of July 2019. It was an absolute treat to eat at Beck, and they should be proud of what they delivered during their residency. It will be sorely missed*
